If you’re social media feed is filled with popular content from India, its most like you have seen Dakhni content. If you are 90s kid, most probably you have watched the cult classic movie “The Angrez”, featuring the all-time favourite Saleem Pheku or if you are a Mehmood fan- “Hame kale hain toh kya dilwale hain”, sung by Mohammed Rafi is definitely something you would still recall.

Dakhni, often known as “Urdu” in Hyderabad, is a language that has a unique legacy and is spoken widely in the southern region of India. Though Dakhni is not a mainstream language today, it was once the official language of Nizam of Hyderabad, as explained by The Hyderabad History Project in their article. It slowly faded away from the courts of Nizam as the British standardized an official language, which we know today as Urdu. But Dakhni never went out of people’s hearts and has remained a household language amongst the common folk.

Pop culture today is seeing a boom with many Dakhni content creators and vloggers creating original content that appeals to the masses including non-dakhni speakers. This is a positive path forward for spreading awareness and to make the language mainstream.
